How to Care for a New Tattoo

How to Care for a New Tattoo

1. Protect Your Fresh Ink

Your new tattoo is more than art — it’s a healing wound. In the first 24 hours, your skin needs protection and gentle care.

Leave the bandage on for the time your artist recommends (usually 2–4 hours).

Wash your hands before touching the tattoo — always.

Gently clean the area with a mild, fragrance-free foaming cleanser like our Chromatic Foaming Tattoo Cleanser to remove excess ink and bacteria.

Pat dry with a clean paper towel, never rub.

2. Hydrate, Heal, and Let It Breathe

This is the peeling phase — your tattoo may feel dry, tight, or itchy as your skin regenerates.

Wash 1–2 times daily with your tattoo cleanser.

Apply a thin layer of tattoo balm like the Chromatic Healing Ointment to keep your tattoo hydrated.

Do not pick or scratch scabs or flakes.

Wear loose, clean clothing to prevent irritation.

3. Maintain Your Art

Once the peeling stops and your tattoo looks “settled,” the skin is still healing underneath. Keep your aftercare routine consistent:

Continue applying a light moisturizer daily.

Protect your tattoo from direct sun exposure — use SPF after full healing.

Stay hydrated and eat well — your skin heals from the inside out.
